|People want to ignore the pain they feel in their mouth. They want to hope that it goes away so they do not have to take a trip to our office for a root canal or some other procedure.
There are times when the pain or symptoms of trouble a person sees in their oral health do disappear and are not a real problem, there are also times when ignoring a problem puts a person at risk for even bigger problems. A dental abscess is often one of the things people should not ignore. They need to know when they can wait a little bit for treatment or when they need to get treatment right away.
Signs of an Abscess
The first step to recognizing you have an abscess that needs urgent attention is to know what the signs of an abscess are. There are several things to look for.
What Can Happen
There are some people that will try to ignore the symptoms of a dental abscess. They may try to manage them. This is never a good idea. Because it is an infection, the abscess can spread to other parts of the body. If it gets into the bloodstream, it can cause an infection in other organs in the body and could result in sepsis.
While waiting a short time before getting treatment for an abscess is possible, you should not wait long. The symptoms typically only get worse as an infection does not clear up on its own. It is always better to seek treatment for an abscess as soon as possible.
