Sleep Apnea Boise & Meridian ID

Sleep is an essential restorative process.

As you sleep, your body rests and repairs itself, allowing you to function during the daytime.

While everyone suffers from the occasional bad night of sleep, thousands of people wake up feeling exhausted every single day.

They have trouble focusing and find it difficult to stay awake during the day.

If this sounds familiar, you may be living with a condition known as sleep apnea and Treasure Valley Oral & Facial Surgery can help.

What is Sleep Apnea?

As you sleep, your body goes through two different cycles.

These cycles repeat several times during the course of the night.

They are essential for allowing your body to rest and repair itself physically, mentally, and emotionally.

When you have sleep apnea, however, your sleep cycles are disrupted.

Sleep apnea is a condition in which your breathing is disrupted.

You stop breathing for several seconds several times during the course of the night.

Each time you stop breathing, you wake up.

In most cases, you are completely unaware that this is happening.

Your brain wakes up just enough to get your breathing started again.

Each time you fall asleep again, your sleep cycles start all over again.

When you have sleep apnea, your breathing may stop anywhere from 5 to more than 30 times per sleeping hour.

Because of this, your body is not able to complete the necessary sleep cycles to give your body the rest and repair it needs.

[[h3:Types of Sleep Apnea]]]
There are two types of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, is the most common type.

This type of sleep apnea occurs when your airway becomes blocked.

Central sleep apnea occurs when your brain fails to communicate properly with the muscles that control breathing.

Sleep Apnea Symptoms

When you have sleep apnea, you wake up every morning feeling completely exhausted.

It may feel like you never went to sleep in the first place.

While this is one of the most common symptoms, it is not the only one. Other symptoms include:
•  Snoring
•  A sore or dry throat in the mornings
•  Headaches when you wake up
•  Excessive daytime sleepiness. You may even fall asleep performing daily tasks.
•  Trouble concentrating
•  Becoming irritable very easily

The longer sleep apnea goes untreated, the worse your symptoms become. You may even develop serious medical issues. These issues include:
•  Hypertension
•  Heart disease
•  Diabetes
•  Low blood oxygen levels
•  Stroke

Non-Surgical Treatments for Sleep Apnea

There are several non-surgical treatments available for sleep apnea, including:
•  Weight loss
•  Changing your sleep position
•  C-PAP
•  Oral appliance therapy

Surgical Treatments for Sleep Apnea

In cases of more severe sleep apnea, you may be recommended surgery.

Depending upon your specific situation, there are a few different types of surgery that may be suggested.
•  UUUP. UUUP stands for uvulopalatalpharyngoplasty. This is a procedure that involves removing tissue from the pharynx and soft palate. The tonsils may also be removed as well. UUUP is one of the most common surgical treatments for sleep apnea.
•  Tongue advancement. This surgery moves the main muscle in your tongue forward to keep the tongue from falling into your airway.
•  Hyoid advancement. This surgery moves the hyoid bone, which is located where the tongue meets the pharynx. This helps to prevent the airway from collapsing.
•  Advancing the lower jaw. This procedure moves the lower jaw forward, enlarging the airway.
•  Nasal surgery. This surgery removes obstructions from your nasal cavity.
